I feel the hard earth under feet
The darkness and fog close round me
Brandishing sword at my side
To fight bitter heart and my pride

Steep, craggy cliffs to the right
The swamp I can hear in the night
And demons and ghouls close behind
Through the valley of shadows I wind

Whispered blasphemies in my ear
My wicked heart holds them dear
I look back not wanting to go
But to see just how far that I've come

I find myself missing you
The dead bring their memories as proof
And the footsteps I hear at my back
Remind of the faith that I lack

But two giants that I've come to face
Religion and Ruin their names
But I have left pagan for dead
Religion struggles in my head

But all I need is you...

Footsteps at my Back is in reference to the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and the footsteps behind the main character play a double meaning - symbolizing not only those gaining on him with the purpose of hunting him down and killing him, but also the footsteps of God - closing in behind him to pursue and protect him.

We all walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death - it's how we handle it and more importantly Who carries us through that is the important issue. In the story as well as the album, Pilgrim is faced with temptations, blasphemy and even despair in the Valley, but realizes He is being pursued and protected.

The video for Footsteps at my Back was filmed exclusively at Christ Church in San Francisco, California - an over hundred year old building featuring original woodwork and architecture. The video was filmed and produced by Matt Odom, out of Los Angeles, who also produced Nate Currin's Goodnight California music video. The song "Footsteps at my Back" was recorded in Atlanta, Georgia at Zac Recording, and is part of the project being produced by Simon Illa and engineered/mixed by Grammy Award winning engineer, Sam Thomas.

A special thanks to Christ Church - San Francisco and Pastor Toby Kurth for graciously allowing us to use Christ Church's facilities to record and produce this video.

The idea of working on a concept project came to me almost 3 years ago now, and I knew immediately I wanted to attempt to put the story of The Pilgrim’s Progress to music...
